Great News About My Son, Jon

A Past Due Update

In April of 2018, I last wrote about my son, Jon, and his journey back to health. In that post I wrote about Jon’s health problems, the miracle of Neuro-Acupuncture and of Dr. Jason Hao. Dr. Hao’s treatments got Jon out of his wheel chair and moving again, and many of the symptoms abated. Muscle spasms almost went away. Chronic pain and its associated symptoms decreased markedly. He walked but required a walker for assistance, but still spent plenty of time in a wheelchair to rest. Long story short, Jon was getting better.

A Turn for the Worse

While driving to dinner on Mothers Day, 2018, a driver pulled out in front of me from behind a wall. I wasn’t driving fast, maybe 25 MPH. Jon and my wife, Dotty were in the car with me. There was no time to stop, but I was able the swerve and avoid a collision. Sadly, Jon wrenched his neck badly – kind of a sideways whiplash.

Many of the symptoms (muscle spasms and chronic pain, in particular) returned, and Neuro-Acupuncture helped but had limited effectiveness (Jon still highly recommends Neuro-Acupuncture for people with chronic pain, by the way). While some symptoms returned, Jon maintained the ability to walk with a walker, but his progress stalled.

So we kept searching for treatments that might help. And in January of this year, we found one. And this one is, simply put, incredible.

The Egoscue Method

One of my favorite bloggers, Glenn Reynolds, posted about a book he had ordered online: Pain Free: A Revolutionary Method for Stopping Chronic Pain, by Pete Egoscue. Here’s the blurb from the link:

Starting today, you don’t have to live in pain.

That is the revolutionary message of this breakthrough system for eliminating chronic pain without drugs, surgery, or expensive physical therapy. Developed by Pete Egoscue, a nationally renowned physiologist and sports injury consultant to some of today’s top athletes, the Egoscue Method has an astounding 95 percent success rate. The key is a series of gentle exercises and carefully constructed stretches called E-cises. Inside you’ll find detailed photographs and step-by-step instructions for dozens of e-cizes specifically designed to provide quick and lasting relief of:

• Lower back pain, hip problems, sciatica, and bad knees
• Carpal tunnel syndrome and even some forms of arthritis
• Migraines and other headaches, stiff neck, fatigue, sinus problems, vertigo, and TMJ
• Shin splints, varicose veins, sprained or weak ankles, and many foot ailments
• Bursitis, tendinitis, and rotator cuff problems

Plus special preventive programs for maintaining health through the entire body.
With this book in hand, you’re on your way to regaining the greatest gift of all: a pain-free body! With the help of Pete Egoscue’s revolutionary program of quick stretches and strength-building exercises, you can cure chronic pain, and do it naturally.

One of the people helped by Pete Egoscue was Jack Nicklaus: “Pete Egoscue totally changed my life.” That caught my attention.

Musculoskeletal Problems

Many people live in chronic pain (and associated chronic fatigue) due to musculoskeletal problems caused by a variety of factors. The Egoscue Method shows you very specific exercises (called E-cises) designed to address each component of a particular chronic pain problem. For Jon, the biggest problem was muscle spasms, followed by back pain and constant pain in the right groin muscle.

So, in early January of this year, I bought the book and read the first three chapters. I came away convinced that this warranted a try, so I put together a plan to get Jon started. After the first session, Jon read the entire book…he felt it addressed the basic problems he had been experiencing for all these years.

Jon mapped out his own treatment schedule and worked it for two months, improving all along. Due to the seriousness of his condition, there was a lot of areas of his body needing work: feet, knees, hips, back, shoulders, and neck. But after two months, it seemed he had hit a wall – he was walking a lot more and in less pain, but not making any more progress.

After fruitlessly searching the Albuquerque area for trained Egoscue experts, we finally reached out to the source: The main office for the Egoscue Method, in San Diego. More advanced help was indeed available in the form of Skype session therapy.

Jon is now about halfway through the sixteen sessions we purchased, and the results are astounding. Jon is walking without assistance and is improving every week. His stamina is building – he still takes a walker for longer forays to stores, sporting events, and the like, but uses it less and less. At home, his wheelchair sits unused for most of the day. And we’re finally getting used to hearing and seeing him walking again.

Jon’s Calling

For years, Jon asked Doctors why he had such bad and wide spread muscle spasms. The answer was always something along the lines of “That’s one of the side effects of back surgery”. The only treatment options ever offered were standard physical therapy and muscle relaxants, both of which were ineffective for Jon.

Jon now has his life back. And he realized, along the way, that he wanted to help others get out from under chronic pain, too. Jon signed up to get certified in the Egoscue Method. He will complete the first course (of two) soon, and is already treating people using these techniques and the software tool they provide – a very well written tablet and phone solution.

I am proud to be patient number 1. Dotty is patient number 2. And a friend is patient number 3. Both of us are seeing results, and we’ve only had one session each. Patient 3 had her first session yesterday.

Thank You

I’ve written about Jon’s journey several times. and even reached out to you, my readers, for help with our trip to the Mayo Clinic. Thank you all for your help and your inspirational support. It made the journey easier. And it appears our long struggle is coming to a happy end.

Don’t Give Up

Throughout this long ordeal, we never stopped looking for solutions. We spent many hours (and lots of money) looking for solutions. Many paths we took were dead-ends – but some helped move us along. And yet we never saw nor heard of the one that helped the most. The Egoscue Method has been around for a very long time, but was hidden in the blizzard of offerings online. The lesson I learned: we have more solutions available than ever before, and more ways to find that information. But it’s not always easy to find. Don’t ever give up.

In the realm of ideas everything depends on enthusiasm… in the real world all rests on perseverance.
